Situated on a sprawling 800-acre parcel just off US-131 in Allegan County (between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids), this park offers an on-site lake, four heated pools and a splash pad, an 18-hole golf course, mini golf, hiking and fitness trails, tot center, a ropes course, bocce ball, basketball, tennis courts, and more. Numerous seasonal activities, including flea markets, are also held each year.
One of southwest Michigan’s newest camping destinations is the Kal-Haven Outpost in South Haven. Offering 44 primitive wooded tent sites, 20 RV sites with power/water hookups, and seven spacious cabins, as well as a duplex and rental house, this 50-acre property is connected to the 33-mile Kal-Haven Trail Linear State Park. The cabins were built by a local craftsman and each sleeps up to eight, with three queen beds and a queen sleeper sofa, as well as a large sleeping loft. Each cabin is outfitted with handmade furnishings, a window air conditioning unit, a farmhouse table, and benches. Outside, each cabin features a fire ring, grill, and picnic table so that guests can truly enjoy the natural surroundings.

Camping in Central West Michigan
Camp Ao-Wa-Kiya in Shelby offers a Christ-centered camping experience for youth ages 7-17. Located on Stony Lake in Oceana County, this summer camp combines outdoor adventures, lake activities, and friendship building with religious programming. Each cabin holds up to 12 campers, with two counselors who guide them in their daily activities. Family and women’s-only retreat camps are also offered.
Thirty years ago, Poncho’s Pond RV Park opened up on Old 31 (Pere Marquette Highway), just one block south of US-10 in Ludington. Situated on 28 grassy acres, the park features a three-acre pond stocked with fish for hours of family fun, paddle boats, three pools (one for adults only), basketball, volleyball, horseshoes, bike rental, playground, recreation hall, a game room, and more. There are 226 campsites, including 69 luxury sites, making this one of the top-rated privately-owned parks in the state. Poncho’s Pond is open from April through October and is located just miles from the Lake Michigan shoreline, Ludington State Park, and attractions like Historic White Pine Village.
For more than 60 years, Forest Hills Club in Saranac has operated a membership-based, cooperatively-owned nudist club on a 45-acre wooded parcel in south-central Michigan. This clothing-optional park offers all the amenities of traditional campgrounds, like swimming, sunbathing, horseshoes, volleyball, shuffleboard, badminton, darts, card games, potlucks, and more. The center of activity is the large heated, L-shaped swimming pool, surrounded by a spacious deck with plenty of chairs and chaise lounges, where nudity is mandatory. Forest Hills Club offers tent and RV sites, as well as three rental cabins. While this is a membership-based club, they welcome daily members through with hopes that day visitors become future members.
