Several West Michigan bakeries will offer paczki for Paczki Day, a day that coincides with Fat Tuesday.
Marge’s Donut Den, located on 28th Street in Wyoming, opened at 4 a.m. and will close at 6 p.m. Employees made 18,000 paczki ahead of Fat Tuesday to prepare for the large crowds.
Marge’s offers 12 different flavors, including apple, peach, blueberry, apricot, chocolate, custard, lemon, peach, raspberry, strawberry, white cream and the traditional prune. Customers can choose from granulated or powdered sugar.
The store started taking orders over a week ago, hoping to keep the crowds down a bit on Paczki Day.
Paczki Day is traditionally observed the day before Ash Wednesday here in the U.S. Although, in Poland, paczki sales are the highest on Fat Thursday, which is the Thursday before Ash Wednesday.
Paczki are Polish cuisine. They’re described as deep-fried pieces of dough, shaped into flattened spheres, and filled with some sort of sweet filling.
Marge’s Donut Den will also provide live entertainment on Paczki Day. The schedule is as follows:
- Silver Tones from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
- Drummers, a special needs group who will allow customers to play the drums with them from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Hark Up Music, a West Michigan eclectic horn band from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Anyone who wants to order an assorted Paczki variety pack from Marge’s Donut Den can call 616.532.7413. Specialty orders can be made at the den on Tuesday, March 5.
