When you encounter someone in need on the street, it’s hard to know exactly what to do. Giving money or ignoring the person are not the only two options. There are some practical resources you can offer to someone who is in need of help. Here are some resources that you can have at your fingertips.
You’ll find that most people in crisis don’t want to call 2-1-1 because navigating “the system” is too overwhelming for them. Here’s what you can do to help:
- If the person is experiencing homelessness and needs emergency shelter, bring or direct them to Mel Trotter Ministries. You can find out about all of the resources available at www.meltrotter.org/gethelp
- You can call, live chat, email or text for resources through the 211 website at http://www.hwmuw.org/211 bookmark the info in your phone.
- Finally, if you financially support organizations that help people who are experiencing hunger and homelessness, you know that the money is going directly into your community for people who are ready to receive help.
Remember, no one can help everyone, but everyone can help someone.
