Question 1: Describe your job and why you love it.

I am the publisher for the Kalamazoo/Southwest Michigan’s Women’s LIfeStyle monthly magazine. I also promote two annual expos: Kalamazoo Women’s Expo – always the first weekend in March and the Kzoo Baby & Family Expo in mid February. In the fall of 2017, we founded Kalamazoo MASTERMIND. A women’s organization created to bring professional women together.

Question 2: Dig through your purse and tell us three must have items you found and 1 item you were surprised to find.

Lipstick, credit card and cell phone charger. I was pleasantly surprised to find a Biggby gift card.

Question 3: When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?

Because I lost my mother when I was young my heart was set on becoming a mother. So I was blessed to become a mother of two amazing children who married truly great spouses that fit right into our family. Together they have given me 7 “Loves of my Life” grandchildren.

Question 4: What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?

Never accept “NO” for an answer. If you really want something and you’ve done your research, find a way to go around the “NO” and make it happen.

Question 5: What’s the job you’ve had (in your lifetime) that still gives you nightmares?

Picking blueberries when I was a teenager. Yuck! Dirty work – hot and sweaty!

Question 6: What’s the best thing you’ve done to advance your career?

In 2008, I left a corporate career to start my own business. I’ve never looked back and feel like I’m living the life. It’s always challenging, never boring and mostly amazing.

Question 7: Flats or heels?

Flats for sure….

Question 8: Crying at work? Okay or not okay?

Okay, for a moment and not often, but then there is the moment you pull up your big girl pants up and move on.

Question 9: Work/life balance? How do you make it work? What time do you “clock out”?

I’m not sure you ever totally “clock out” when you own your own business. Especially this time of year when it seems I’m running 24/7 to keep on top of the expos. I do surround myself with very talented people who know how to get things done. So I’m blessed in that regard. And then there’s always the hot tub and a nice glass of wine to keep me balanced.

Question 10: Eating lunch at your desk? A do or a don’t?

I must confess that most days I do eat lunch at my desk. However I try to arrange a lunch date at least twice a week with a colleague or friend.

Question 11: What makes you grateful?

Family, friends and a wonderful supportive community. I feel truly grateful to have all of these things in my life, plus a fulfilling career.

Question 12: What was your biggest blunder in a job? What did it teach you?

Frankly – my struggle is that it makes me uncomfortable to promote myself in that type of situation. And I have finally learned over the years that it’s okay to be proud of my accomplishments and to be my own “best promoter.”

Question 13: Describe your morning routine.

I’m up at 5:45, Facebook with three cups of black coffee, then show and dress for work. Given the day, my goal is to be at my desk by 8:30 each morning.

Question 14: Proudest career moment to date.

Wow…this is a tough one to answer. I’ve had some wonderful career moments. Top two: 1st Anniversary Party of the Women’s LifeStyle Kalamazoo and being asked to speak at the Federal Women’s Program in Battle Creek in 2018.

Question 15: What’s the most important thing in your life right now?

Taking my life and business to the next level. Recently we’ve make some great changes at Women’s LIfeStyle. We’ve changed our format entirely going from newsprint to glossy and really dialing up content plus reaching all the way from Battle Creek to the lakeshore. We also added the Kzoo Baby and Family Expo to our list of fun things to see and do in Kalamazoo.
