25 Questions with Eva Aguirre Cooper
Meet Eva Aguirre Cooper. She’s the Director of Community Affairs for WOOD TV8 and the driving force behind important community projects like Angel Tree, Water for Flint and The Connecting with Community Awards. Her community involvement includes participation on various boards and committees such as the Experience Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids Community Foundation, Grand Rapids Sister City – Mexico Committee and ongoing participation in the Hispanic Community. We asked Eva 25 career questions so you can learn more about this power woman and her career.
Question 1: Describe your job and why you love it.
As Community Affairs Director, I get to be a part of all things community. I promote great things happening, connect needs with resources, relief efforts and campaigns and most importantly, try and be a voice for our community. I love the variety of things I get to do from reporting on our news, MC’ing an event to participating on a board – every day is different.
Question 2: Dig through your purse and tell us three must have items you found and 1 item you were surprised to find.
Tissue, sunglasses and lipstick. I was surprised to find my special rock.
Question 3: When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be an Olympian in either swimming, track or basketball and study physical therapy.
Question 4: What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?
That it’s not about me but what I have to offer and say to help others.
Question 5: What’s the job you’ve had (in your lifetime) that still gives you nightmares?
Working in an auto parts packaging plant during college in Detroit. It was really hard work and it made me really appreciate going to school.
Question 6: What’s the best thing you’ve done to advance your career?
Take a risk and try something new. Every job I’ve ever had there was always an element I had never done before.

Question 9: Work/life balance? How do you make it work? What time do you “clock out”?
This is always a work in progress. I have a great husband who supports my crazy hours. Over the years, I have gotten better at prioritizing my time. I work to live not live to work. Some days I get home at 5:30 p.m. and most days I get home much later.
Question 10: Eating lunch at your desk? A do or a don’t?
Sometimes it’s necessary to eat at your desk but I prefer to go out to lunch.
Question 11: What makes you grateful?
My family, health, friendships and living in a great community makes me grateful every day.
Question 12: What was your biggest blunder in a job interview? What did it teach you?
Early in my career, I was very quiet and did not say much in an interview. I learned that I have a voice but no one will hear it if I don’t speak up.
Question 13: Describe your morning routine.
Get up around 6:00 a.m., shower, hair, make-up etc. Feed the dog. Drink 2-3 cups of coffee. Off to work.
Question 14: Proudest career moment to date.
I am so proud of working in and for the community. When there is a need and we can help fulfill it, that is my greatest feeling. It actually works and we can help!

I’m a news junkie but I enjoy shows like the “Voice”.

Question 23: What experience in life made you the most nervous?
When I had to do my first live shot for news.
Question 24: What’s one question you always ask in an interview?
Why, always ask why. Why is it important. Why do they do what they do. Why do they think we should care.
Question 25: What’s the best part of your job?
Being out in the community and meeting so many people doing great things.
