Perrigo Foundation helps fund innovative summer program for kids

Arts education is extremely important in the academic success for many students. Recently, Fennville residents gathered for a community celebration to honor participants of the Growing Young Artists summer program through Saugatuck Center for the Arts. Held at Fennville Park, students, parents and community members enjoyed ice cream, games and live music while taking in a colorful exhibit of flags created by the 80 student artists.

The program was made possible in part by a $10,000 grant from the Perrigo Charitable Foundation. Perrigo has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with the Saugatuck Center for the Arts, this most recent gift bringing its financial support to more than $230,000 since 2007.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Perrigo Foundation for its support for the Growing Young Artists program and for its continued support over the years,” said Kristin Armstrong, Executive Director, Saugatuck Center for the Arts. “This program is critical in helping to grow and shape these promising young minds, particularly within an often-marginalized population. Perrigo’s gift provides the opportunity to build upon our program and expand to reach even more at-risk students.”

In its seventh year, Growing Young Artists is an innovative educational program for Pre-K through 8th grade students. The program is designed to give at-risk students creative and educational outlets. Using art as a medium, students learn not only core skills in literacy, math, and science, but also important social-emotional skills like collaboration, problem-solving, self-direction and empathy. The three-week program was originally intended for the migrant student population and this year has expanded to include Title I students. The program is provided free of charge to students enrolled in the Fennville Public Schools.

“The Perrigo Charitable Foundation is proud to support Saugatuck Center for the Arts and the Growing Young Artists program,” said Tom Farrington, Executive Vice president, Chief Information Office for Perrigo and president of the Perrigo Company Charitable Foundation.  “As a healthcare company, Perrigo is committed to the overall well-being of the communities we serve. We embrace the opportunity to provide these students with tools needed to help ensure future success in school, in work and in life.” Farrington previously served as Board Chair of Saugatuck Center for the Arts.
