Mission to health: meet a River Bank Run Road Warrior

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) Among the runners in the Fifth Third River Bank Run are some real warriors. Road Warriors are ambassadors of the race who train with coaches, raise money for Fifth Third River Bank Run charity partners, then participate in the race.

One Road Warrior is Sarah Gust. She’s an employee of Fifth Third Bank who is on a mission to be healthy.

Two years ago, Gust weighed more than 400 pounds. She decided she needed to make a drastic change, and underwent bariatric surgery. After that, she realized she wanted to be more than just thin, she wanted to be healthy. She slowly started exercising, then bumped it up to running. Gust says she never was a runner, but just those first few seconds on the treadmill had a huge impact on her life. She increased her time gradually and her running journey started.

So far, Gust has lost more than 200 pounds. She says her life has truly changed; she didn’t know what being healthy felt like.

Gust hopes to run the 10K at the Fifth Third River Bank Run. Follow her on her journey through her Road Warrior blog at 53riverbankrun.com.
