Spring Fling week is an incredible time to witness the changing of the seasons at the farm.

Butterflies are Blooming

The annual Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies Are Blooming exhibition at Meijer Gardens is the largest temporary tropical butterfly exhibition in the nation. Tropical butterflies from around the world fly freely in the Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory every March and April.

Throughout the exhibition, there is special educational programming and the Lena Meijer Children’s Garden offers butterfly-themed activities.

Grand Rapids Public Museum Spring Break Activities

Spend this Spring Break at the Grand Rapids Public Museum to enjoy intriguing exhibits, planetarium shows and hands-on activities! Numbers On Parade Hands-on Activities

Spring Break at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum offers Numbers On Parade, a humorous and artistic look at math through a variety of crafts, picture books, and interactive exhibits. Plus, enjoy a musical concert of instruments and songs from around the world, theater workshops for children of all abilities, planetarium shows, and three floors of exhibits. Ten different crafts each day will be inspired by a math-related picture book, which can be read in our ThinkTank.

Spark Lab at Holland Museum
The Smithsonian Institution’s Spark!Lab is a hands-on invention space that will allow children and families to create, collaborate, explore, test, experiment, problem solve, and invent. Spark!Lab activities incorporate science, technology, engineering, art, history, and math (STEAM). Visitors are provided with opportunities to explore the invention process and their own inventiveness. Experiences through Spark!Lab empower kids to develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed today and in the future.

John Ball Zoo

Make today a Zoo day! It’s time to get outside, and make today an adventure at John Ball Zoo. Make today wild with animals from around the world. Make today one to remember. Make today a zoo day at John Ball Zoo. Open daily from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. 

Animal Feedings: 

  • Watch a zookeeper feed the Magellanic Penguins daily at 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
  • A zookeeper will feed the Pelicans fish at their daily 11:30 a.m. feeding. 
  • Spider Monkeys will enjoy their dinner on Monkey Island or their indoor habitat daily at 4:00 p.m.  

Story time at the Zoo:

  • Make your trip to John Ball Zoo a fairy tale with Story time at the Zoo!
  • Children can enjoy an animal-themed story, and meet an animal associated with that story.
  • This program is designed for pre-school aged children.
  • Free with Zoo admission.

New Animals

The John Ball Zoo has many new animals arriving throughout 2019. During Spring Break, guests can enjoy two new animals that have already arrived at the Zoo. The staff favorite six-banded armadillo is digging and exploring her habitat in the Natural Treasures building. In the aquarium, guest can enjoy the intelligent and unique Giant Pacific Octopus. 

YMCA Day Camps

Reserve your child’s spot now for one of their Spring Break Day Camps. Day campers will enjoy activities such as swimming, sports, crafts, and outdoor play.

Grossology Week
Willard Library – Battle Creek

Willard Library has proclaimed Spring Break Week 2019 as Grossology Week. Call it gross, but nothing engages kids in science more than a down and dirty hands-on project. Visit the Grossology Lab, where experiments will include some icky, creepy, and smelly science projects.

The Air Zoo

From rare and historic to inspiring artwork and exhibits, there’s always something new to discover at the Air Zoo. Come see the more than 100 air and space artifacts, inspiring interactive exhibits, full-motion flight simulators, indoor amusement park rides and hands-on, science-based camps.  Right now there’s a fun exhibit called Game Changers, that delves into video gaming.

Expressions is a collaboration between the Muskegon Area Intermediate School District and the MMA that showcases the artistic talents of Muskegon County K-12 students in the visual arts. 

In Pieces: The Art of Vintage Puzzles

Through April 21

Vintage Puzzles from the early 20th century offers a glimpse into the early history of this popular pastime. Vintage puzzles made from a variety of materials and featuring an array of subject matter and piece shape are on display. As an added treat, spend some time assembling a rotating offering of community puzzles.

A+ for Educators: Illustrations by Patricia Polacco

Celebrate teachers with the art and writing of famed children’s book author and illustrator Patricia Polacco. A+ for Educators features original artworks from several of Polacco’s award winning books, with a special focus on those inspired by the teachers in her life.
