The Perrigo Company Charitable Foundation today announced a donation of $63,182 to two schools serviced by the Allegan Area Educational Service Agency, in support of their literacy work with the High Impact Leadership (HIL) project. The project is designed to improve leadership and student literacy rates.

Fennville Elementary in Fennville, Michigan and Pine Trails Elementary in Allegan, Michigan were selected as the recipients of the donations, which will support kindergarten through fifth grade reading resources.

“Perrigo recognizes literacy as the foundation for academic success and success beyond school,” said Tom Farrington, Executive Vice President, Chief Information Officer for Perrigo and President of the Perrigo Company Charitable Foundation. “We are pleased to support this program dedicated to providing the necessary resources to help young readers in Allegan County reach their full potential.”

The HIL project is a multi-year United States Office of Education grant that came about as a result of previous work in West Michigan. The Reading Now Network, a collective effort in more than 20 counties and 150 school districts in West Michigan to improve early literacy and, ultimately, student achievement across all grade levels and Western Michigan University’s Achievement Centered Leadership (ACL) projects set the stage for this multi-million dollar effort in 76 elementary schools. The HIL project will support teams of school principals and teacher leaders by:

  • Providing intense professional development and support, and money for renewal projects for teams of leaders in 76 schools that are implementing a set of new literacy essentials.
  • Placing a trained team of school renewal coaches in each project school.
  • Providing a lower level of professional development support and funding for leaders in an additional 75 schools.
  • Applying a set of proven school leadership practices for school renewal and sustainable implementation.

“We are thankful to Perrigo for this donation to help better our schools and continue our effort to develop elementary students reading skills,” said Laurie Schmitt, Allegan Area Educational Service Agency Assistant Superintendent for Instruction. “With Perrigo’s grant, the building leadership teams will be able to support their literacy priorities by ensuring that teachers have professional learning opportunities and students have access to quality print resources.”
