Qualified CNAs are very hard to find. Many elderly within the community suffer due to the lack of quality CNAs.  Through the Ionia County Intermediate School District and Heartlands Institute of Technology, students are becoming Certified Nurses Assistants. The program is providing a valuable service to both participants and those needing care.

“This CNA class was created to provide an avenue to an underserved population within the Ionia County Community and to honor Governor Snyder’s goal of P-20 education statewide.” -Deb Wagner, Ionia ISD

The program is a partnership between Heartlands Career Center of Ionia County ISD,  Belding Adult Education of Belding Area Schools and Portland Adult Education of Portland Public Schools.

All students are enrolled through those two adult ed programs and are working towards completion of their high school diploma, not a GED, and have elected to come Heartlands Institute of Technology to gain valuable career skills and and potential employment opportunities. All students that successfully complete the state curriculum and clinical practice hours are able to sit for the Certified Nursing Assistant written and practical testing.

Last year seven students were enrolled and seven passed the test.  The program is grant-funded through the Adult Education Partners and support from the West Michigan Works Office. Because of these partnerships, no cost is absorbed by the students.

The partnership with the Commission on Aging is one of those avenues for students toward gainful employment.
