GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — If you live in West Michigan, you know sunshine can be elusive during the winter months. It’s those winter months that have many dreaming of the sunnier and warmer days of summer.

In West Michigan, the sunniest months are June and July which average 63 percent and 65 percent of sunshine, respectively.

Last weekend marked another weekend in June with barely any sunshine in West Michigan, totaling 19.5 percent.

It hasn’t only been weekends that have been cloudy. Out of the last nine days, June 17 was only day that exceed 23 percent sunshine in Grand Rapids.

Last week, Grand Rapids only received 14.7 percent sunshine. It’s very unusual because during the summer the sun’s angle is at its highest and strongest.

So far this month, Grand Rapids received 13 days with less than 50 percent sunshine which helped hold down the monthly sunshine to 46.1 percent.

The frustrating part of the lack of sunshine is the days it has been most lacking — the weekends.

The cloudiest day of the week have been Saturdays with 19 percent followed by Sundays at 31 percent. The total weekend sunshine comes to a lackluster 25 percent.

The brightest day of the week have been Thursdays with 64 percent closely followed by Mondays at 62 percent. It appears the final Monday of June will follow the trend.

A low-pressure system heading towards Michigan later Tuesday will bring a lot of clouds across the Great Lakes Tuesday into Wednesday.

If the clouds linger, it could make June 2018 only the seventh June with less than 50 percent sunshine.

After the clouds move out, a heat wave will follow. This weekend will see plenty of sunshine and temperatures in the 90s accompanied by lots of humidity.
