UNION COUNTY, N.C. (WSPA/WCBD/WOOD) — Searchers have recovered the body of a 1-year-old boy who was riding in a vehicle swept off a North Carolina highway by Florence’s floodwaters.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post that Kaiden Lee-Welch’s mother drove around barricades on North Carolina Highway 218, into turbulent water spilling over from the Richardson Creek.

“She managed to free herself and Kaiden, who was in a car seat, but lost her grip on him in the rushing water,” the post stated.

Rescue teams spent several hours searching for Kaiden Sunday night. His body was recovered Monday.

Deputies warn the area is hazardous due to flooding.
