The top picture is the Lake Michigan satellite picture from Wed. PM.  It’s sunny in Wisconsin and NE Illnois.  The Arctic air moves over Lake Michigan, picks up moisture and warmth from Lake Michigan and produces the lake-effect clouds and snow that we’ve had in Michigan for several days.  The high temperature Weds. was -10 in Chicago and Milwaukee.  That air crossed Lake Michigan.  The high temperatures on the Michigan side of  the lake included +5 in Muskegon and +4 in Holland.

BTW – Moline IL/Davenport IA set an all-time record low temperature before midnight Wed. evening at 29 below zero.

The high temperature on Wed. was +2 in Grand Rapids.  G.R. has only had 12 days (going back into the late 1800s) when the high temp. has been +2 or colder (coldest high ever was -6 in Feb. 1899).  The high was -1 in Kalamazoo.  That was shortly after midnight.  Temps. along I-94 were near -10 in the afternoon.  There have only been 4 days (that I can find so far) when the high temp. has stayed below zero midnight-to-midnight in Kalamazoo.  Kalamazoo set a record low temp. of -15.  .

This was South Haven late morning – looks like Siberia – snowing here and the ice really growing away from shore in this cold air.

The sun broke thru Wed. AM in Breckenridge (east of Alma).  Most areas stayed mostly cloudy to overcast. At mid-afternoon, Grand Rapids (+2) was 23 deg. colder than Fairbanks, Alaska (+25).  Norris Camp MN was the coldest place in the U.S. with a low of -48.  The warmest spot was Thermal CA with a high of 78.  That gave the U.S. a 126 degree temp. difference between highest and lowest temperature.

Chicago and Milwaukee had high temps. of -10 on Wed.  Chicago has had back-to-back low temps. of -20 or colder. Wed. was the second coldest day in in nearly 150 years, average temp. -17° (low of -24° and high of -10°) The only colder day was 12/23/1983 with an average temp. of -18°. (-25°/-11°).   Valdez, Alaska has 45″ of snow on the ground.

Also:  Weds. AM there were 19 states that had at least one station reporting a below zero temperature.  SavedFoundWhiteoutCool pic. of Lake Michigan ice from the air east of ChicagoFlying with the geeseCombine bowling, gymnastics and yogaWaterspout yesterday off GreeceA robin
