The top pic. is the sunset at Muskegon MI Sunday evening (GLERL camera from NOAA Coastwatch).  We have gained one minute of daylight in the evening since last week.  We continue to lose daylight in the AM.  The sunrise is at 8:08 am today and that goes to 8:14 am in the first week of Jan.  Enjoy what sunshine we get the next two days.  November gave us just 9% of possible sunshine and that’s exactly what we have recorded for the first 16 days of December.  One year ago, Grand Rapids had 8″ of snow on the ground.  We had 32.9″ of snow in December last year.  This year so far we’ve had just 1.9″.  We’re at 16.3″ for the season in G.R. and that’s 1.2″ below average.  Kalamazoo has picked up 18.2″ so far this winter.  It’ll be a little breezier today.  Small Craft Advisories for Lake Michigan until 8 pm.

This is the Lake Michigan satellite picture from Sunday PM.  You can see wispy cirrus clouds and the more solid, bright white low clouds and leftover fog.  You can see snow on the ground in N. Wisconsin. and the U.P.   The snow on the ground can very from bright white in open fields, to harder to spot in forested areas where the wind blows the snow off the trees and you are looking more at conifer trees than the ground below.  Again, shallower Houghton Lake has an ice-cover and deeper Higgins lake just to the north is ice free.  Houghton Lake has an average depth of only 7.5 ft. and a maximum depth of only 22 feet.  Higgins Lake has an average depth of 44 feet and a maximum depth of 135 feet.  That’s a big difference.

Here’s the Great Lakes satellite picture from Sun. PM 12/16/18.  There’s low clouds and fog from the top of the Thumb area to just west of US 127…and also along the lake north of Grand Haven.  There’s not much snow in Lower Michigan.  Snowcover in Lower Michigan included 1-2″ at Houghton Lake, 3″ at E. Jordan and 3-4″ at Gaylord.  In the U.P.,   The most snow in the U.P. is at Tamarack Loc. with 20″.  Delaware has 17″ on the ground.  Other snow totals:  10″ Marquette (airport), 7″ Newberry and Ironwood, 6″ Sault Ste. Marie and 5″ at Newberry.  The overnight run of the European model gives G.R. less than 1/4″ of rain late Thurs. into early Fri…then a few snow showers the night of the 23rd and another 1/2″ -3/4″ of snow on Christmas Day.  It is cold over much of Alaska…-30 at the Barrow Airport Sun. AM and -37 at Nuiqsut.

Also:  Beautiful lightning next to a half moon near Rhodes, GreeceSnow and palm trees.  Little Rock AR is up to 7.8″ of rain for Dec. already.  1.08″ of rain in Sacramento on Sun. – a daily record.  Cool weather pics. hereStrong storm moving into E. IndiaSunset in Jamaica.  Heavy snow at Bologna, Italy
