The pic. above was at the South Haven MI Beach late Thursday. One place you can usually count on to be cooler when the overall weather is hot is at Lake Michigan. The prevailing southwest or west wind brings the air over the cooler water and that can make a significant difference. That was the case on Thursday. The high temp. reached 88 in Lansing, 85 in Gr. Rapids and 81 at the airports in Muskegon and Holland. However, the high temp. at the S. Haven beach was 73.9 and at the Muskegon beach just 70.9. The water temp. was 63 at Muskegon and 66 at Saugatuck, so the air temp. at the South Haven beach was 3 deg. warmer than the Muskegon Beach and the water temp. was also 3 deg. warmer.
With a southwest wind, the lake cooling will be more pronounced north of Holland than to the south the next few days. There is a Beach Hazards Statement for Muskegon and Oceana Counties for this (Fri.) aftn. and night for 2-5 foot waves. With southwest winds, don’t jump off or swim near the south side of the piers and breakwaters.
