The Fort Wayne Tincaps, who were rained out Wednesday, are half a game behind the Whitecaps and holding on to the last playoff spot. The Great Lakes Loons are 1.5 games back and the South Bend Cubs are 3 games back.

Wednesday night meant the return of the Whitecaps promotion that brings famous Tigers to town. This time, it was former infield Placido Polanco, a key player on the 2006 team that made it to the World Series. He said he remembers that year fondly in part because of the way fans embraced the team.

“I remember the Yankees coming to town for the series, and I felt like they didn’t have a chance,” he remembered. They had Jeter … but it was so loud in Detroit that I felt they didn’t have a chance. So the fans really supported us 100 percent. That was a big part.”

The Whitecaps and Lugnuts meet again Thursday and Friday at Fifth Third Ballpark.
