KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — When Western Michigan University head football coach P.J. Fleck awards one of his walk-ons a scholarship, he pulls out all the stops.
Video posted on the YouTube channel for Broncos football shows what happened at fall training camp: Fleck, wearing a full uniform including pads, challenged walk-on Kasey Carson to keep him from scoring in a drill. He said if Carson stopped him, evening meetings would be cancelled. Carson, a linebacker from Battle Creek, made the stop.
Then Fleck called in the star power. In a video on the big screen, actor Sylvester Stallone appeared. He congratulated Carson on his hard work and perseverance.
“The fact that you are a walk-on and you accomplished this is extraordinary,” Stallone said.
“You have gotten a full-ride scholarship, my man,” he continued.
Carson’s teammates cheered loudly, crowding around to congratulate him and lifting him up.
Last year, Broncos walk-on Trevor Sweeney of Mattawan was surprised with news of a full-ride scholarship when Fleck taped a note to the football he recovered at practice.
The Broncos will open the season on Sept. 3 when they meet Northwestern on the gridiron in Evanston, Ill.
