GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — An 11-year-old girl from Grand Rapids was the first female runner to finish the 5K at this year’s Fifth Third River Bank Run.

“It feels nice to get a new PR out here,“ James-Heer told 24 Hour News 8 shortly after she crossed the finish line.

“That’s incredible,” said race veteran Greg Meyer. “If you ran that in high school, colleges would be looking at you for scholarships,” he added.

“It takes a lot of training and hard work,” James-Heer said.

James-Heer finished 14th overall and about 2 minutes and 38 seconds back from overall 5K winner Isaac Mukundi of Lansing.

Mukundi broke the tape just 15 minutes and 14 seconds after he started the race, putting his pace at 4 minutes and 55 seconds.

“I’m feeling good,” he said shortly after finishing.

This is Mukundi’s first River Bank Run.

“It’s a nice place,” Mukundi said of Grand Rapids.
