Unbeaten Pirates to play for state championship

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WOOD) — Pewamo-Westphalia remained unbeaten and earned a berth in the MHSAA Division 3 state championship game after defeating Erie-Mason 60-45 in the state semifinals at the Breslin Center on Thursday afternoon.

The Pirates jumped out to a 15-0 lead in the first quarter. Erie-Mason battled back to pull within a point at 23-22 late in the second quarter.

Pewamo-Westphalia led at halftime 28-22. After a pretty even third quarter, P-W pulled away, outscoring Erie-Mason 18-10 in the final 8 minutes.

Andre Smith led PW with 16 points. Brennen Nuremberg added 14 points.

Pewamo-Westphalia improves to 27-0 overall, advancing to face unbeaten Iron Mountain, also 27-0.

Tip-off for the Division 3 title game is set for 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Breslin Center.
