GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — For the second straight year, the Grand Rapids Drive is headed to the postseason.
Fresh off a Central Division championship, the Drive held one last practice at Calvin College Monday morning before hitting the road for Canada.
This time last year, the Drive had just made the playoffs for the first time. They had also just lost a teammate. Tuesday marks one year since the death of Zeke Upshaw, who suffered a sudden cardiac episode and collapsed on the court during a game.
“I think the thing that stands out to me is the togetherness of the team, the cohesion of the team,” Drive head coach Ryan Krueger said Monday. “Last year we had that. Our guys came together in an unimaginable situation to play a basketball game after what happened. But I see a lot of the same characteristics in this team. We play for each other. We share the ball, we defend. We share in each other’s successes. I see a lot of characteristics that make this team successful.”
The Drive opens the playoffs Tuesday evening with an elimination game against the Raptors 905 in metro Toronto.
