Sparta faces tough competition in O-K Blue

Football Frenzy

ADA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The Sparta football team is returning five or six players on each side of the ball this season, including some key skill players, but they’ll still face an uphill battle in the O-K Blue.

Sparta participated a four-team scrimmage at Forest Hills Central Wednesday, along with Newaygo and Belding.

The Spartans went 4-5 last season. But if you put them in almost any other conference, they almost certainly would have made the playoffs.

“I think the biggest thing we need to learn is we just need to show up every week because in the O-K Blue, there’s no weeks off,” Mark Chapman, now in his third season as the Spartans’ head coach, said. “We’ve got two state champions and a bunch of other really good football teams. If I said it was fun, I’d be lying because it’s tough. It’s really, really, really good football. It’s fun for our kids. It’s fun on Friday nights. It’s great to be back out here.”

The first Football Frenzy of the season is Aug. 23.
