Linemen get spotlight at Plainwell’s ‘Battle of the Bigs’

Football Frenzy

PLAINWELL, Mich. (WOOD) — Five weeks ahead of the start of high school football, players are spending their summer vacations to prepare for the 2018 season.

On Friday, Plainwell High School hosted its ninth annual lineman challenge known as the “Battle of the Bigs.”

Fifty teams featuring 250 linemen from 22 West Michigan schools took part in a series of challenges from the bench press to sled drive relays. The event was created to put the spotlight on the guys in the trenches who don’t typically get much attention.

“(The event was started) because I coach the line and I wanted those guys to get a chance,” said Plainwell offensive line coach and event organizer Chuck Hadley. “I got tired of going to 7-on-7’s and watching them do nothing or just snapping the ball, so we put an event together that would focus on them and give them a chance to have something to look forward to in the summertime like the skill guys do with the 7-on-7 stuff.”
