Football Frenzy

Frenzy preview: Battle of unbeatens, old rivalry

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Looking ahead at the spotlight games for the Sept. 14 Football Frenzy.

Wayland (3-0) at Middleville Thornapple Kellogg (3-0)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday

Through the first three weeks of the season, there’s an unexpected pair of teams at the top of the O-K Gold Conference.

Wayland and Thornapple-Kellogg have been early surprises and both enter Friday’s key conference showdown with unbeaten records.

Wayland upset South Christian last week 19-14 in the conference opener. It was its first win over the Sailors since 2007, and its first 3-0 start since 2003.

The Wildcats blanked Kenowa Hills in the opener and then edged Lansing Waverly 38-36 in a high-scoring thriller.

The Wildcats, led by quarterback Carson Sevigny, haven’t had a winning record since 2013, the last time they qualified for the state playoffs.

Thornapple Kellogg also has turned some heads with its torrid start after going 5-22 the last three seasons, including a winless 0-9 campaign in 2016.  The Trojans haven’t had three consecutive wins to open a season since 2010, the last time they made the postseason.

Thornapple Kellogg, guided by coach Jeff Dock, is averaging 30 points per game in wins over Hastings, Byron Center and Forest Hills Eastern.

The Trojans scored 29 points or more only once a year ago.

This will be the 69th all-time meeting between the longtime rivals. Thornapple Kellogg has a 46-21-1 edge in the series.

Whitehall (3-0) at Muskegon Oakridge (3-0)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday

A West Michigan Conference clash between longtime rivals is on tap as both teams are perfect on the season.

Whitehall has amassed 118 points in wins over Kelloggsville, Mason County Central and Hart, while allowing only 28 points.

The Vikings have finished 6-4 the past three seasons.

Meanwhile, Oakridge has three early wins in a row for the second straight season and is looking to extend its 13-year postseason streak.

The Eagles have been dominant on both sides of the ball. Offensively, they’ve tallied 185 points and scored 60 points or more twice.

Oakridge has wins over Chippewa Hills, North Muskegon and Shelby.

Last season, Whitehall defeated Oakridge 28-14, snapping a lengthy losing skid. It was its first win over the Eagles since 1999.

West Catholic (1-2) at Grand Rapids Christian (2-1)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. Friday

This will be the first meeting between these two teams since 2007, when they were in the City League together.

Grand Rapids Christian has recovered from its season-opening loss to Dewitt by topping Zeeland West and Wyoming the past two weeks.

The Eagles’ rejuvenated offense has combined to score 86 points in its two wins.

West Catholic, five-time defending Division 5 state champions, picked up its first win a week ago after two losses to open the season.

The Falcons defeated Comstock Park 35-14 in their O-K Blue Conference opener. They lost non-conference games to Jackson Lumen Christi and Lansing Catholic Central.

West Catholic, which hasn’t had more than two losses in a season since 2013, is 27-8 all-time against the Eagles.
