Woman killed in Byron Township crash near US-131

BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Byron Township Tuesday morning.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Department said Melinda Sue Farias, 60, from Gaines Township was driving a Pontiac Grand Prix northbound on Caterpillar Court around 6:45 a.m. Witnesses told police the Pontiac did not stop for the stop sign at 76th Street, east of US-131, and was hit by a SUV heading eastbound.

When officers arrived on scene, Farias was pinned in the vehicle and the engine compartment was on fire.

Deputies and firefighters were able to extinguish the fire which was contained to the engine compartment.

Farias was pronounced dead on scene.

The driver of the SUV, 28-year-old Jenny Frances Rodgers from Byron Center, was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
