SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — A Van Buren County man is facing charges after allegedly shooting a woman in front of three teenagers.

It happened around 4 a.m. Friday at a home in the South Haven Mobile Home Community located in the 73000 block of Chambers Street.

South Haven police say the victim called 911, saying she had been shot. She was taken to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo to undergo surgery for a gunshot wound to the stomach. Her condition is unknown at this time, but authorities say she is expected to survive.

Three teenagers between the ages of 13 and 15 were inside the home at the time of the shooting, but authorities say there were not injured.

Police say the victim identified the suspect, who investigators found at a relative’s home in Covert. Detectives questioned the man and searched the home, finding the weapon.

Investigators say the suspect is a 50-year-old man from Covert; they’re withholding his name until he’s formally charged with assault with intent to murder.  The suspect remains in the Van Buren County jail until his arraignment Monday.

Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a domestic situation. Police say the suspect and victim were dating.

“This isn’t something that happens everyday in South Haven. It’s a very secure community. I can’t even tell you the last time in the city there’s been a shooting. It has been a few years now. We’ve had a few out in the township, but nothing serious like this,” South Have Police Department Sgt. Patrick Carlotto said.
