Witnesses saw woman on cell phone before fatal crash


WATSON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A 22-year-old woman was killed in a single vehicle crash near Allegan on Tuesday, according to police.

It happened on M-222/116th Avenue near 19th Street in Watson Township, east of Allegan, around 7 p.m.

Witnesses told Michigan State Police that they saw the driver using her cell phone before the crash occurred and the vehicle was swerving all over the road.

Troopers believe the Jeep Grand Cherokee veered off the right side of the road before rolling several times.

Police say the driver, a 22-year-old woman from the Martin area, was thrown from the vehicle and died on scene. Her name has not yet been released.

Authorities believe she was wearing her seat belt despite being ejected from the vehicle.

The crash remains under investigation.
