Who will Schuette pick as a running mate?

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Speculation is swirling around who Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Schuette will pick for his running mate after his elusive answer.

“I can’t tell you what her name is,” Schuette said. “I can’t tell you her name right now.”

24 Hour News 8 Political Report Rick Albin says the following women may be under consideration:

Rep. Laura Cox – Her legislative experience, budget knowledge and residency on the east side of the state could create some geographical balance. However, she is poised to win her first term in the Michigan Senate in November and may not want to take a gamble on the governor’s race.

Candice Miller  –  A former Secretary of State, congresswoman and current Macomb County Public Works commissioner, Miller has massive name identification, is a favorite of Republicans. However, she left Congress presumably to be closer to home and passed on her own run for governor earlier this year.

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson  –  She has also served in the Legislature, was the running mate of Dick DeVos in 2006, has statewide name recognition and is from Oakland County. However, she is also in the running for a Michigan Senate seat this fall and may not be interested in running for leiutentant governor again.

Sen. Margaret O’Brien – She is in a tightly drawn Senate district in Kalamazoo County and has a long legislative career. O’Brien is currently running for her final term in the Senate and could bring expertise to the ticket. However, geographically she wouldn’t expand Schuette’s potential appeal.

Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker – The Van Buren County senator is term-limited, and as a fellow attorney, she might be a good fit with the current Michigan Attorney General turned gubernatorial candidate. However, Schuitmaker is making her own bid to become the Republican candidate for Michigan Attorney General and has not expressed any public interest in the lieutenant governor spot.

Schuette’s pick could also be none of the above, since the decision is solely his and based on what he determines is important.

The Republican will likely name his running mate next week, ahead of the state Republican convention where his running mate would be confirmed, on Aug. 25.
