Updated plans for Detroit hockey arena development

DETROIT (AP) — A new hotel would be part of a planned development around the new Red Wings hockey arena just north of downtown Detroit.

The Detroit Free Press and Detroit News report Sunday that updated details of the project have been released by Olympia Development.

The $627 million arena is under construction and expected to open in September 2017.

The hotel could have as many as 400 rooms. The Free Press reports that seven developers have indicated an interest in building the planned hotel.

Olympia Development is expected to soon select hotel and real estate partners.

The projects are expected to be part of a 45-block entertainment district anchored by the 20,000-seat arena. The Red Wings currently play at Joe Louis Arena, which opened in 1979.
