ZEELAND, Mich. (WOOD) — Tyson Foods Inc. is recalling thousands of pounds of chicken nuggets sold nationwide that may contain pieces of hard plastic.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the recall Tuesday. It involves approximately 132,520 pounds of chicken nugget products including five-pound bags of Tyson Fully Cooked Panko Chicken Nuggets with the following information:

  • Best if used by date of July 18, 2017
  • UPC code of 0-237000-3558-5
  • Case code 2006SDL03 and 2006SDL33
  • Item number 23575-928
  • Establishment number P-13556 printed adjacent to the best by date on the back of the package.

Michigan shoppers need only worry about the five-pound package, which was sold at Costco locations nationwide. A 20-pound package included in the recall was shipped to a single wholesaler in Pennsylvania, Tyson Foods says.

The USDA said Tyson discovered the problem after handling multiple consumer complaints, but so far no one has reported any illness from consuming the recalled foods.

Consumers should return the recalled nuggets to the store they purchased them or throw them out.  They can also cut out the UPC and date code from the back of the package and mail it to the following address for a full refund:

Tyson Foods – CP631

P.O. Box 2020

Springdale, AR 72765-9989

The Missouri-based company said the plastic pieces may have come from a plastic rod and would not have been caught by metal detectors that screen each package.

Tyson has more than 75 food plants nationwide, including a facility in Zeeland. It’s unclear which site the problem originated from.
