GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Blowing snow and slippery road conditions created hazardous conditions that impacted the morning commute.

Jerry Bryne with the Kent County Road Commission told News 8 that there are an additional 50 crews working to clear the roads this morning.

“Roads are drivable at lower speeds. People are driving 35-45 mph, it’s certainly drivable. It’s not drivable at higher speeds. I see some people blowing by me at 60-70 mph, that’s foolishness. If you drive it at 35 (mph), you can certainly make it,” said Bryne.

As of 6 a.m. Wednesday, Byrne said most crews continue to focus on clearing state roads and main county roads, like 4 Mile Road, 68th Street and West River Drive. He added crews most likely won’t be able to get neighborhood streets until late Wednesday, at the earliest.

“It’s just that constant battle of mixed precipitation. It’s what we do. It just takes some patience on the motorists at this point,” said Byrne.

The road commission advised drivers to give plows plenty of room and don’t pass a plow on the right. It may be using a wing plow that drivers can’t see.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Michigan until 1 p.m. Wednesday. The area experience accumulating snow and freezing rain as well as winds up to 15-20 mph before daybreak.

Drivers can expect slippery road conditions and reduced visibility due to blowing snow during the morning commute. Drivers who venture out are reminded to turn on their headlights, clear all snow and ice from their vehicles, and use caution.

Drivers can track the progress of the MDOT snowplows from the safety of home before hitting the road. Some plows are also equipped with cameras, allowing visitors to see the roads as they are cleared. The map is visible on the Mi Drive website

The wintry weather could impact flights at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport. Passengers can check real-time flight information online before heading to the airport.
