GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — As “To The Point” continues to introduce you to new lawmakers in Lansing, we’re speaking to two new House members from Kent and Ottawa counties.
Rep. Lynn Afendoulis, R-Grand Rapids Township, explained why she decided to run.
“A really significant issue for me was how my children were talking about politics and the view that they have about that work and about politicians, and it was and it is concerning to me,” she said. “So I wanted to demonstrate to them it’s honorable work, that it’s something to aspire to and that anybody can do it, so that was a significant reason that I ran.”
Luke Meerman, R-Polkton Township, said running was a natural progression of past community service.
“The love of my country, I think that’s where it starts for me. Appreciation of what we have in Michigan, wanting to pass something on to my kids. And there’s a lot in between there: getting involved with the Farm Bureau and some of the other organizations that gave me an opportunity to be exposed to be around other people,” he said.
