PAW PAW, Mich. (WOOD) — A Van Buren County man is facing charges in connection to the death of his young daughter, who Michigan State Police believe was the victim of ongoing child abuse.

Corey Kucsera was formally charged Monday with first-degree murder in the death of his 3-year-old daughter, Sophia. Michigan State Police confirm Kucsera was arrested over the weekend in the case.

Sophia’s stepmother, 31-year-old Kate George, was charged with murder last month. MSP said the murder charge was based on evidence of torture and child abuse.

Authorities say Sophia was with George when she was found unresponsive in an Almena Township home on Sept. 4. Two other children were removed from the home and are OK.

A prosecutor approved charges against Kucsera Friday, after investigators say they gathered enough evidence against him. He remains in the Van Buren County jail on $5 million bond.

Kucsera’s next court hearing is scheduled for Nov. 14.
