ANTWERP TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Police say a suspected drunken driver was injured when her car crashed into a group of trees west of Mattawan Sunday morning.

Authorities say it happened around 2:15 a.m. on the 27000 block of 60th Avenue near County Road 657 in Antwerp Township.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office says the driver, a 29-year-old woman from Watervliet, drove her vehicle off the road and struck several trees, totaling her vehicle.

Authorities say the woman managed to leave her vehicle, walked to a neighboring house and knocked on the door. That’s when people inside the home called police.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital, where she is recovering from injuries that weren’t life-threatening.

Police say alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash and the woman was not wearing a seat belt.
