PAW PAW, Mich. (WOOD) — A Van Buren County woman has been sentenced to 31 years in prison for the murder and abuse of her stepdaughter.

Kate George was sentenced Monday morning in Van Buren County Circuit Court. She previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree child abuse in the case. A felony murder charge was dropped.

Authorities say George was with her 3-year-old stepdaughter, Sophia, in Almena Township in September 2018 when Sophia was found unresponsive.

Michigan State Police who investigated Sophia’s death said the murder charge against George was due to evidence of torture and child abuse.

Sophia’s father, Corey Kucsera, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in her death in March. In turn, a felony murder charge against him was also dismissed.
