Soldier from SW MI killed in crash in NM

UNDATED (WOOD/AP) — One of two U.S. Army soldiers killed in a crash in southern New Mexico Tuesday night was a southwest Michigan native.

Cpl. Cole Wixom, 24, was from Bloomingdale. His family told 24 Hour News 8 over the phone Wednesday night that they are making arrangements to bring him home.

He and Pfc. Jamie Riley, 21, of New Jersey, were killed in the crash involving two armored Stryker vehicles on US-54 in Otero County, New Mexico. An additional seven soldiers remained in the hospital Thursday.

All of the soldiers involved were part of the 1st Armored Division out of Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, according WOOD TV8’s sister station KTSM. The crash happened about 30 miles away from the city.

The crash remains under investigation.
