BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (WOOD) — Detectives in Benton Harbor are looking for the person who shot a man during a house party on New Year’s Day.

Officers with the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety were called to a shooting in the 100 block of Apple Avenue, between Colfax Avenue and McAlister Street. They arrived to find 35-year-old James Parker-Hersey, who had been shot multiple times.

Hersey was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance for surgery. His condition is unclear.

Detectives learned an argument between Hersey and a male suspect led to the shooting. The gunman left the scene before officers arrived.

Police say the shooting does not appear to be connected to a New Year’s Eve shooting in nearby St. Joseph Township, which killed a military member on holiday leave.

Anyone with information in this case is encouraged to contact the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety’s tip line at 269.927.0293 or Crime Stoppers at 800.342.STOP.
