NEW BUFFALO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A man from Shelby, Indiana, is in critical condition after crashing his motorcycle on I-94 in southwestern Michigan Saturday evening.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office says Daniel Francis, 53, was exiting eastbound I-94 to the US-12 ramp toward Niles when he lost control on the curve. He crashed into a ditch and was thrown from the bike.

Authorities said Francis was taken to Spectrum Health Lakeland in St. Joseph with life-threatening injuries.

He was not wearing a helmet, the sheriff’s office said. Witnesses told investigators that speed may have been a factor in the crash. It is not yet known if drugs or alcohol were factors.
