Deputies: Man arrested after shooting girlfriend in ankle

BANGOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A man was arrested after he allegedly shot his girlfriend in Van Buren County Tuesday.

It happened shortly before 6:30 p.m. in the 62000 block of 36th Avenue near 62nd Street in Bangor Township, southeast of South Haven.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office said authorities were called to a South Haven hospital after a 28-year-old woman was dropped off with a gunshot wound.

The victim told authorities she got into an argument with her boyfriend when he allegedly hit her with a shotgun then shot her in the ankle, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

The suspect, 30-year-old Brandon Lee McCollum of Bangor, later returned to the hospital and was arrested in the parking lot, the release said.

McCollum was lodged at the Van Buren County Jail for assault with intent to commit murder and felony firearm charges as well as an outstanding warrant, according to the sheriff’s office.
