GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Hudsonville resident who owns several Mexican restaurants could be deported after he filed false tax returns for years.

Marc Cuellar, 37, was sentenced to a year in a federal prison, according to a Tuesday release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. He had already been ordered to pay about $370,000 in back taxes and penalties to the Internal Revenue Service.

Cuellar owns and co-owns a number of Mexican restaurant chains in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. Authorities say he skimmed about $607,914 from his Michigan restaurants between 2008 and 2012 and never reported that income on his taxes.

He eventually reached a plea deal with federal prosecutors in the case.

Cuellar is a Mexican citizen. He is in the U.S. legally, but as a result of the tax fraud could be deported after he serves his prison sentence.
