GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Consumers Energy says a raccoon caused a large power outage in downtown Grand Rapids Tuesday morning.

The outage occurred just before 8 a.m. and affected nearly 700 homes and businesses east of US-131 and south of I-196 including Pearl Street NW, W. Fulton and Oakes Street.

Power was quickly restored around 8:40 a.m.

Consumers Energy says the outage was caused by a raccoon who climbed into a substation in the area.

Grand Rapids City Hall lost power for a short time, but city officials said power has since been restored there.
