GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A 30-year-old man is in critical condition after being discovered along the Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids Monday.

Police at the scene said a Grand Valley State University groundskeeper found the man near the Blue Bridge around 8:30 a.m. In a news release update, officers said the man was unconscious and lying on the river’s edge.

Officers have identified the man as Robert Campbell of Kent City. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was in critical condition as of Monday afternoon.

Investigators are trying to determine how Campbell ended up in the river overnight or early Monday morning and became unconscious.

Police say they’re following protocol in treating the situation as suspicious until they can rule out any criminal activity. However, investigators say there were no signs of trauma to Campbell.
