GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — A mechanical problem with the Grand Haven drawbridge led to hours long closures on US-31 at the start of the busy Memorial Day travel weekend.

The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety says the Bascule Bridge failed to fully close around 1:45 p.m.  Friday. The bridge operator told officers the sections of the bridge would not “re-seat together.”

The issue was fixed and the highway fully reopened just before 4:30 p.m. Friday. However, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office cautioned drivers it would be some time for the backups to clear.

Grand Haven Area Public Schools sent out an alert Friday afternoon notifying parents that many district busses would likely be late because of the highway closure and traffic backups.

The Friday before Memorial Day is traditionally one of the busiest travel days of the year.
