Two teens injured in Ottawa Co. tree fort fire

SPRING LAKE, Mich. (WOOD) — Two teenagers were taken to the hospital after a tree fort caught fire in Ottawa County.

Deputies arrived to the tree fort on Erie Drive around 1 a.m. Saturday. They say it was engulfed in flames.

The Ottawa County sheriff's office says five teens built a fire pit out of cinder blocks inside the fort. Three boys went home, and the other two decided to stay the night in the fort. The two teens said they agreed to take turns tending to the fire.

Police say both fell asleep in the fort on a mattress, and admitted to drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana. The mattress then caught fire, and in turn, caught the fort on fire.

Both boys were able to escape the flames with first- and second-degree burns and were taken to the hospital, but are expected to recover.

The sheriff's office says the fire is still under investigation.
