GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A Grand Haven Township man is facing a murder charge in the death of an 8-month-old baby.
Investigators say the 19-year-old suspect, Cameron Toppen, is the boyfriend of the baby’s mother. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says he had been watching 8-month-old Scarlett Rae-Marie Burroughs while her mother was at work.
On Wednesday, he was arraigned on charges of first-degree child abuse and felony murder.
On Nov. 15, authorities were called to the 14000 block of Dogwood Court on a report that Scarlett was having a seizure. The baby was taken to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital where she died several days later.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says deputies launched their investigation based on “some concerning factors” at the home and doctors’ initial evaluation of the baby.
Tuesday, an autopsy on Scarlett determined she died from a traumatic brain injury and her case was a homicide.
