GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — An Ottawa County man has been indicted on federal charges for allegedly attempting to traffic teens for prostitution.
According to a federal indictment filed July 14 and unsealed Tuesday, Matthew Eugene DeWitt faces four counts of attempted sex trafficking of a child and a count of attempted sexual exploitation of a child.
The criminal complaint that explains specific details behind the charges remains sealed in federal court, but the indictment references four victims but does not include any of their names. They ranged in age from about 14 or 15 to 17.
It alleges that DeWitt tried to traffic three of the teens for commercial sex in the summer of 2020. The trafficking charges linked to the fourth victim, who is also the victim in the exploitation charge, date back to as early as October 2019.
The exploitation charge alleges that between October 2019 and February 2020, DeWitt tried to get the fourth victim to produce child pornography.
