HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities have arrested the suspect in connection to the shooting death of a 14-year-old at a Holland Township hotel.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said 18-year-old Juan Sandro Cabrera was taken into custody by state police Friday morning. He faces murder, weapons and gang-related charges.
The shooting happened just after midnight Feb. 16 at the Hampton Inn off US-31 north of Holland. Cabrera is accused of gunning down 14-year-old T.J. Wells with what court records show was an AR-15.
Photos taken on Snapchat moments before the shooting show Cabrera and another young man with bandanas over the faces and holding assault rifles, Bennett confirmed.
The shooting happened after a dispute between Wells and another man, who were members of rival gangs, witnesses told investigators. Witnesses also said Cabrera is a member of the Latin Kings gang.
The suspect’s father is also refusing to talk. Juan Pablo “John Paul” Cabrera, 34, was arrested late last week after failing to show up for a parole hearing, Capt. Mark Bennett said.
The case remains under investigation.
