GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — A Grand Haven man charged with murdering his roommate has taken a plea deal.

Justin David Streeter appeared in court Thursday in connection with the July 2019 death of his roommate, 55-year-old Thomas Allen Kennedy.

Police said Streeter got into an argument with Kennedy and stabbed him at their apartment on Columbus Avenue just east of North Griffin Street. Kennedy died at the scene.

Streeter was arrested shortly after the crime.

Streeter was originally charged with open murder in the case. On Wednesday, he pleaded guilty but mentally ill to second-degree murder, court records show. In exchange for his plea, the court agreed to dismiss the original charge of open murder and set a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison with credit for the time he’s already served.

Streeter is expected back in court for sentencing April 19.
