WRIGHT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A driver sustained minor injuries Tuesday when part of an excavator was knocked off the truck in front of him and fell into his car.
It happened around 5 p.m. on westbound I-96 at 16th Avenue in Marne.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says the small scrap excavator was being hauled in the back of a dump truck. Its arm hit the 16th Avenue overpass, broke off and fell onto another westbound vehicle.
The driver of that second vehicle, 55-year-old Michael Fuetz of Muskegon, had to be freed from his car by firefighters. He was hospitalized with minor injuries.
The excavator arm fell onto the roadway, where it was hit by a third vehicle. The driver of that car wasn’t hurt, but the car was damaged.
The driver of the truck, 49-year-old Timothy Postma of Zeeland, also wasn’t hurt. He was ticketed for a load height violation.
The Michigan Department of Transportation is looking over the overpass, but it remains open.
