Officers ID man shot, killed near WMU campus

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says a Battle Creek man lost his life in a shooting near Western Michigan University’s campus.

Police Monday identified the victim in Saturday’s shooting as 21-year-old Thomas Paul Anders. Earlier in the day, investigators had said a person of interest was in custody on unrelated charges.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. Saturday in the 800 block of Oakland Drive. When police arrived, they found Anders with a gunshot wound to the torso. He was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

Witnesses told police a man shot the victim during a fight and then ran off.

Anders is not believed to be a student at WMU.
