SPRING LAKE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Four people, including two young children, escaped safely when a boat caught fire on Pettys Bayou near Spring Lake on Sunday afternoon.

The fire sparked around 12:20 p.m. on a nearly 20-foot Bombardier, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, after the boat had some engine trouble. By the time the Marine Patrol fireboat got to the scene, smoke and flames were coming from the engine compartment.

Two adults and two children, ages 2 and 4, were on the boat when the fire sparked. The person driving the boat told authorities they had tried to put out the fire using two fire extinguishers on the boat, but were unsuccessful.

That’s when they got off the boat and swam to a nearby dock. None of them were hurt. The children had life jackets.

The fireboat put out the fire and the Bombardier was then towed to a nearby dock.
